    In a fireside chat moderated by SCSP president Ylli Bajraktari at the recent SCSP AI+ Expo, Wright and Buck laid out their vision for leveraging AI to drive innovation in energy production. According to Wright, "Energy is life," and with the increasing reliance on electricity for powering AI systems, it has become imperative to strengthen America's grid. The Genesis Mission seeks to apply AI to scientific discovery, driving breakthroughs in fields such as fusion, materials science, and grid interconnection studies.

    Buck highlighted NVIDIA's commitment to this endeavor, stating that "NVIDIA is 100% committed and invested in Genesis." Over the past two decades, NVIDIA has collaborated with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on building supercomputers with national labs, laying the groundwork for the Genesis Mission. The partnership brings together the DOE's vast resources, expertise, and data with NVIDIA's cutting-edge technology and software.

    One of the key initiatives underway is the development of two AI supercomputers at Argonne National Laboratory. Equinox, the first of these systems, boasts 10,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs, while Solstice will utilize a staggering 100,000 GPUs with NVIDIA Vera Rubin.     To illustrate the scope of this endeavor, Buck shared an example of how AI can be leveraged in fusion research. An open-source NVIDIA AI model was trained on 1.5 million physics papers before being fine-tuned on 100,000 papers specifically addressing fusion research. This specialized agent provides researchers with a powerful tool to accelerate their work and advance the field faster.

    Wright also pointed to the importance of scaling up energy production in America, highlighting the need for increased electricity generation to support AI growth. Over the last two decades, the U.S. has seen notable gains in oil and natural gas production but stagnation in electricity output. The DOE is actively working on revitalizing all three pillars of the U.S. grid: natural gas, nuclear, and coal.

    In terms of nuclear energy, Wright emphasized the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs), which are set to become operational by July 4th this year, with further expansions planned for the near future. On fusion, the strategic fusion office has been established, with lab and university programs being "hypercharged" by the insights provided by AI.

    Wright concluded by stressing that a strong grid is essential for harnessing America's full energy potential and supporting AI growth. If this goal is not met, it could lead to slowing down AI development. In contrast, Buck emphasized that advancements in per-watt efficiency in NVIDIA chips have led to significant gains in the field of AI.
