  • NVIDIA's latest survey, "State of AI in Healthcare and Life Sciences," has shed light on the profound effects of artificial intelligence (AI) within the healthcare and life sciences industries. This comprehensive study, which polled over 600 professionals globally from a range of fields including digital healthcare, medical tools and technologies, pharmaceutical and biotech, and payers and practitioners, has revealed that AI is revolutionizing various aspects of these sectors.

At the forefront of this transformation are generative and agentic AI, which have proven to be instrumental in automating time-consuming tasks, such as document summarization and data analysis. Moreover, AI-assisted drug discovery has emerged as a critical application, with pharmaceutical and biotech companies leveraging AI-powered tools to identify new protein structures and develop personalized treatments.

The survey also found that AI is having a tangible impact on the bottom line of healthcare and life sciences organizations. With 81% of respondents stating that AI has helped increase revenue, and 45% reporting benefits within less than a year after implementation, it is evident that AI is becoming an indispensable tool for driving business growth in these sectors.

One of the most significant findings from NVIDIA's survey was the widespread adoption of AI across various industries. A staggering 83% of overall respondents agreed that "AI will revolutionize healthcare and life sciences in the next three to five years." Furthermore, 73% stated that AI is helping to reduce operational costs, while 58% emphasized data analytics as the top AI workload.

Pharmaceutical and biotech companies were particularly enthusiastic about AI's potential, with 59% citing drug discovery and development as their top use case. In contrast, payers and providers focused on administrative tasks and workflow optimization, with 48% of respondents identifying these areas as their primary use cases.

The survey also revealed that AI is expected to have a significant impact in the next five years, with advanced medical imaging and diagnostics (51%), virtual healthcare assistants (34%), and precision medicine (29%) among the top predicted applications.

In terms of generative AI adoption, 54% of respondents stated that they are using this technology. Digital healthcare emerged as the leader in generative AI use, followed closely by pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Notably, coding and document summarization – specifically for clinical notes – was identified as the top generative AI use case.

Overall, NVIDIA's survey provides a compelling picture of the transformative potential of AI within the healthcare and life sciences industries. As these sectors continue to evolve and innovate, it is likely that AI will remain an essential component of their success stories.
