  • NVIDIA has partnered with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) to enhance its cutting-edge research and education in artificial intelligence. The collaboration aims to provide students with access to the latest tools and technologies, enabling them to develop real-world applications that benefit the naval and joint force.

At NPS, a state-of-the-art NVIDIA AI Technology Center has been established at the university's Monterey campus. This center will serve as a hub for research, education, and innovation in AI, providing faculty with access to resources such as the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute. The institute offers instructor toolkits that have proven critical in helping NPS educate tomorrow's leaders in AI.

The partnership also involves the deployment of an NVIDIA DGX GB300 system at NPS, which will be used to support over 1,500 in-resident students, 600 faculty members, and thousands of external partners. The system is designed to accelerate model training and inference capability, enabling researchers to develop high-fidelity digital twins of various environments.

According to Col. Randolph Pugh, NPS AI Task Force lead and AI Portfolio director, the DGX GB300 system will provide on-premises capability for added privacy, allowing students to use a generative AI large language model tool for research purposes. The system is also expected to support model training and inference capabilities with the university's own GPT.

The deployment of the NVIDIA DGX GB300 system marks an exciting milestone in NPS's efforts to develop real-world naval applications using AI. According to Pugh, understanding the environment that the Navy operates within is critical for effective naval planning and readiness. The system will enable researchers to simulate various ocean operational environments, including wind, temperature, salinity, current, and water depth.

The partnership between NVIDIA and NPS also involves the transfer of technology from non-profit organization MITRE. MITRE recently shared its Advanced Simulation for Planning and Enhanced Navigation (ASPEN) simulation framework with NPS. The framework provides a high-fidelity digital twin environment for simulating unmanned underwater vehicle navigation, obstacle avoidance, and real-time decision-making under uncertain conditions.

NVIDIA's three-computer solution has been utilized by MITRE to develop physical AI applications. The solution encompasses NVIDIA Jetson AGX, Omniverse, and DGX systems, which are used for accelerated computing, large language model training, and weather forecast modeling.

The collaboration between NVIDIA and NPS demonstrates the company's commitment to advancing AI education in the US government sector. By providing cutting-edge resources and technologies, NVIDIA is enabling researchers to develop real-world applications that benefit the naval and joint force. The partnership also highlights NPS's efforts to become a leading institution for AI research and education.
